Meet Sheree Stopper, our new Program Finance Manager and a proud San Diegan who knows her way around both a spreadsheet and the California coastline. With nearly two decades of experience in finance, Sheree helps districts make the most of their resources and plan for long-term success.
Q: How long have you lived in San Diego? What brought you there and what is your favorite thing about it?
I moved to San Diego in 2003. I originally wanted to attend San Diego State and even had a soft offer to try out for the softball team, but my parents thought it was too far from our home in Astoria, Oregon. After graduating from Pacific University, I moved to San Diego with some college friends and have been here ever since. My favorite things about San Diego are the sunshine, relaxed vibe and beautiful beaches. Who could ask for a better place to live!
Q: What led you to work with California school districts?
I’ve worked in several industries, including accounting, mortgage, construction materials and higher education. After earning my master’s degree in taxation, I realized I wanted more growth, long-term stability and a career that served a greater purpose. Eventually I found my way to the public sector and California’s school districts. Once I was there, I quickly realized how much I loved the work and went back to school to earn my Chief Business Official (CBO) certification so I could continue growing within the field.
Q: How has your experience on the district side informed the work that you’re doing now representing owners as a CM|PM?
Over the years I’ve learned that no two districts are alike. While many share similar foundational structures, each one has its own priorities, needs and culture. Being flexible and attentive to each district’s unique goals is what ultimately helps every project succeed.
Q: What’s a career accomplishment that stands out to you as a defining moment?
One of my proudest career moments was during my time at Lemon Grove School District, where I first had the chance to work with VPCS. Together with King Consulting and the Office of Public School Construction, we secured approval for the largest single application awarded under the state’s Preschool, Transitional Kindergarten and Full-Day Kindergarten (PKTKFDK) program. I didn’t let the setback of not being awarded in the first round deter me, and our persistence paid off in the second round when the State Allocation Board approved $12.8 million in funding for the Lemon Grove Early Childhood Education Center.
Q: What is it about VPCS that made you want to join this team?
The people, without a doubt. I first saw the difference VPCS makes while working on projects at Lemon Grove School District, and it left a lasting impression. When I later moved to Grossmont College, I really noticed what it felt like to lose VPCS. The level of support, collaboration and commitment they bring to every project is hard to match. I wanted to be part of a team that truly makes a difference, and that’s exactly what VPCS is all about.
