Each year during the first week of March, Women in Construction Week offers an opportunity to recognize the women who help shape our industry and the communities we serve. It also invites us to reflect on the values that have guided our work over the years: collaboration, service and the importance of bringing different perspectives to the table.
Women in Construction Week gave Team Van Pelt many opportunities to celebrate, including Business Development Manager Dwena Phillips volunteering with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). NAWIC partnered with Habitat for Humanity for Women Build 2026 in support of a housing development in Citrus Heights, CA. The opportunity reflected values that have always been central to the Van Pelt Way: supporting something larger than ourselves and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. “Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had,” Dwena shared. “It was hard work, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the women and men in our industry who show up and build every day. I’m excited to be part of the event again next year with more Van Pelters.”
Once complete, the development will become Habitat for Humanity’s largest development in Sacramento history with 26 total homes. Experiences like this are a powerful reminder that construction is about more than buildings. It is about creating spaces that support people, strengthen neighborhoods and open doors for the future. For 30 years, that sense of purpose has remained central to VPCS and continues to shape the way we serve our clients and communities today.
That same people-first mindset is reflected in the makeup of our team. At VPCS, we are proud to be a team that is 46% women, with 50% women in leadership. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women represented approximately 11% of the construction industry workforce in 2025. While there is still progress to be made across the industry, we are proud that VPCS continues to be well above that benchmark.
Vice President Kelli Jurgenson shared, “Over the years, one of the most encouraging changes I have seen in our industry is the growing presence of women across all areas of construction. That progress strengthens our teams, broadens perspectives and ultimately helps us better serve the clients and communities who count on us.”
As we celebrate 30 years of building community, we are grateful for the people who have shaped our journey and continue to move our work forward. Women in Construction Week is a meaningful opportunity to recognize the leadership, talent and perspectives that make this industry stronger and help build a better future for the communities we serve.
